The people of Pakistan have suffered numerous natural and human-caused disasters over the past several years. Presbyterians have been in ministry there since before the nation of Pakistan was formed. We stand with them today in their time of need. The recent floods have brought record-breaking destruction to the country, with more than 1,400 people dead and more than 1.5 million displaced. You can make a difference in bringing God’s healing to a nation torn by devastation.

The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) is responding throughPresbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) and working with our ecumenical partners to help meet emergency needs – providing food packages, shelter material, and non-food essentials. Emergency health services are also being provided.

How Can We Respond?

Give – Give to support the relief and recovery efforts through PDA. Individuals may give through their local Presbyterian congregation, on the secure PC(USA) Web site or by sending their check to:

Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
P.O. Box 643700
Pittsburgh, PA 15264-3700

Please include the special designated giving account DR000038 – Pakistan.
Make a donation by calling 1-800-728-7228

Act – Congregations and individuals can put together hygiene kits and baby kits to be distributed through Church World Service.

Pray – Join with others in lifting up the people of Pakistan and those seeking to provide aid in this critical time. As the eyes of the world turn to Pakistan, let us join our hearts in prayer:

God of compassion, please watch over the people of Pakistan, and weave out of these terrible events wonders of goodness and grace. Surround those who have been affected by tragedy with a sense of your present love, and hold them in faith. Though they are lost in grief, may they find you and be comforted; guide us as a church to find ways of providing assistance that heals and gives hope. Help us to remember that when one of your children suffers we all suffer. Through Jesus Christ who was dead, but lives and rules this world with you. Amen.

It might seem overwhelming because there are so many. But you can find info in a couple of ways. One is to use the "Search It!" widget on the upper left – just type in the search terms and you will find all the related posts. Each week Peter Sawtell of NCC Eco-Justice Ministries sends out a thought provoking piece.
Here are three of the destructive stories that we’ve told about ourselves, and some equally short and compelling alternatives. At four words each, those competing pairs of short stories are powerful beyond belief.

"You are a consumer" vs. "You are a steward"

"You are an individual" vs. "You are a neighbor"

Two practical postings at the Clerk’s Corner:

Making the baby suffer? It just so happens to be one of the toughest of all questions pastors and sessions must answer: What to do when non-members ask to have their child baptized?
It’s an emotion-laden question that must be approached not only with understanding of polity and theology, but also with sensitivity to people.

Preventing ministry burnout- OK, clerks, this one’s for your pastor. (One little hint, though… if you do pass it on to him or her, accompany it with this disclaimer: “Don’t assume, because I’ve giving this to you, that I think you’re showing signs of burnout.” It’s a preventative thing.)

By Vernon Broyles III

In placing blame for the Gulf catastrophe, we should admit our own complicity.

There is no way to know how long the environmental catastrophe caused by the explosion at BP’s Deepwater Horizon rig in the Gulf of Mexico will plague us all – yes, all.

The first response in all quarters, of course, was to cast blame: first BP and the drilling company; then President Obama because the government’s response was too slow and too small – though, ironically, much of that blame came from Tea Party types who want little or no government in the first place; then the counterattack, blaming George W. Bush and his Republican predecessors for cronyism in the permitting process for offshore drilling and lax oversight of those who received the permits.

The truth is that there is enough blame to go around for everyone, including us. We are all complicit in the culture of individualistic consumption that demands more and more petroleum, and there is precious little political will to support the kind of genuine, radical change in our living patterns that would reduce our consumption of fossil fuels. We are simply not ready to give up our lifestyles. The difficulty lies, in significant measure, in the tangled web of economic dependence we have woven.

Dear Friends in Monmouth Presbytery,

Mid-summer greetings!

If you’ve been on a mission trip, you already know what a life-changing experience it can be to come away with a renewed sense of your place in the body of Christ and an awareness of how what’s happening in the rest of the world impacts you – and vice versa. Not everyone can go on a world mission trip, but all of us are invited to be part of the next best thing this month!

The world will be coming to Monmouth Presbytery when Christi and Jeff Boyd, mission co-workers from Cameroon, visit in August. My church, Church on the Hill in Ocean, has a long-standing relationship with the Boyds; and First Presbyterian Church in Rumson recently established a new relationship with Christi. After hearing that the Boyds would be here on two consecutive Sundays, the Mission Council of the Presbytery decided to invite them for the entire week. You are invited to share in the ministry of Jeff and Christi in worship, over food, in the garden, and more.

Please look over the schedule and make it a point of coming to at least one worship service or gathering. I especially hope you will come and have dinner with us and the Boyds at Church on the Hill on Wednesday, August 18 – supper and sharing are free, but please let us know you’re coming and how many you’re bringing!

The Kiwanis Club of Jackson and the Presbytery of Monmouth will host a forum about Ocean County’s homeless on Wednesday, September 15 at 7 p.m. The location is still to be confirmed.

The forum will address the problem of the county’s homeless, discuss solutions, offer action plans and establish a network for future discussion and action. The 90 minute forum will present local experts who have worked with the homeless population in Ocean County as well as people who have recently been homeless. It will examine strategies that have been implemented in other areas across the country and will be followed up by a discussion of their merits and shortcomings.

The forum will conclude with a presentation of action plans and the formation of a network of supporting organizations and individuals to support actions that alleviate the needs of the homeless. That network will include other community service organizations, churches, non-profit groups, local legislators, student groups, and business leaders.

This will be a great opportunity to witness to our faith and to find ways to work in partnership with other community groups!

From a predominantly middle-class, white suburban church on the shores of Barnegat Bay in New Jersey, USA, to a group of local mission workers in Kampala, Uganda on the shores of Africa’s Lake Victoria, we are a story of people united in caring for approximately one hundred street children in the Ugandan capital.

Our Pastor, the Rev. Dr. Terry Chapman, first went to Uganda in May of 2007 to attend an African emerging church conference called Amahoro Africa. It was there he learned of the ministry of Caleb Rukundo who serves some of the thousands of children who live on the streets of Kampala. Terry visited three homes where Caleb and his partners provide shelter, food, and clothing, as well as education and the love and mentoring of dedicated workers. He was very moved by Caleb’s transparent dedication to the children as well as the breadth and passion of his vision for the future. Terry brought back this contagious vision to Forked River.

The African Mission Partnership Group (AMP) was formed in September 2007 when Caleb came to visit Forked River Presbyterian Church and told us about his ministry with the street children in Kampala. Twenty church members have dedicated their time and their talents to raise funds to provide the basic needs for the children, now affectionately called “Caleb’s Kids.”

Funds also are needed to send the children to school, as education is not provided by the government. We have taken on the responsibility to pay for the education of four of the children. Funds for educating other children are donated by members of our congregation and other groups. Many of the children are now taking on leadership roles at school.

Malaria and worms are common sicknesses among the children. The first Christmas, when we asked Caleb what the children would like for Christmas, he included worm medicine and sandals, so the worms could not enter the children’s bodies from the muddy streets through their bare feet. We all wept.
