Monmouth Presbytery e-News

June 14, 2010

June greetings!

Food for Thought: The ongoing oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico is a painful, daily reminder of our inability to control nature for our own needs. With that in mind, perhaps this is a good time to hear or re-hear the wisdom of the Wombat (in less than 1 minute) reminds us of everything we need to know about how to get along on earth for the next million years. Wouldn’t it be great to have her on the pulpit supply list!

New in the Clerk’s Corner:

  • So, who was Robert, anyway? If you’re a Clerk of Session, you couldn’t have gotten to where you are today without having at least heard of Robert’s Rules of Order. They’re the unquestioned standard for parliamentary procedure in non-governmental decision-making bodies in the English-speaking world.
  • Reaching out online: When the Apostle Paul set out to grow the church, he relied on the best technology available to him: papyrus and pen for letter-writing; his stentorian voice, strong enough to be heard by large crowds; and ships equipped with the most up-to-date nautical gear to transport him (and his voice) to distant cities. We’re not so limited today, of course -

Update on World Mission and visits by PC(USA) mission co-workers

As many of you will remember, our presbytery took part in the PC(USA) World Mission Challenge in September 2009, when we welcomed the Reverend Choon Shik and Yen Hee Lim. Following the Lims’ visit, Monmouth Presbytery enthusiastically accepted the goal of having 100% of our congregations in relationship with a mission co-worker by the end of 2010. As the 16th presbytery to accept this goal, we are well on our way to meeting it and hoping to be the first presbytery to do so!

If your congregation already has a connection with a co-worker, you know some of the amazing work that our church is doing all over the world. If not, or if you would like to hear some more, we have some exciting opportunities to visit with mission co-workers who are coming to Monmouth Presbytery this summer.

  • Christi and Jeff Boyd, who are connected with Rumson and Church on the Hill in Ocean will visit our presbytery August 13-22. They are available to visit your congregation or group and have a wide variety of programs for all ages. See their schedule, then contact Sue Smith, Bill Turner, or Phyllis Zoon to arrange for a visit. And save the date Wednesday, August 18 for a presbytery dinner at Church on the Hill, Ocean.
  • “Rita” (whose name can’t be disclosed for security reasons) willbe at the Freehold church on July 20 and is available to visit your church on July 21.

We know that many congregations already are in a relationship with a mission co-worker and have heard from several others who have established a connection as a result of this challenge–like Jeffrey McLaughlin who commented, “We, at The Allentown Presbyterian Church in Allentown, NJ were filled by The Spirit and have chosen to respond to the challenge by supporting a field worker in each of the two countries where we do International Mission: Malawi in Africa and Guatemala in Central America.”

Does your congregation have a connection? We would like to have a world map showing all the connections our presbytery has with mission co-workers so please e-mail your congregation’s information or stop by the map near the registration table at the next presbytery meeting.
